Using props

Using props can elevate your couple photography sessions

Props can:

  1. Tell a Story: A shared interest or a sentimental object can beautifully narrate a couple’s journey.

  2. Add Movement: Props like writing love notes, parasols, flowing fabric, string lights, or even a kite can create a sense of motion, adding depth to your photos.

  3. Break the Ice: For couples who might feel shy in front of the camera, props provide something to hold or focus on, helping them feel more at ease.

Simple Yet Impactful Prop Ideas

1. Blankets and Throws

Perfect for outdoor sessions, a soft blanket can create a cozy vibe. Whether you’re cuddling under it or lying down for a dreamy shot, blankets are fun for intimate moments.

2. Picnic Setup

For a romantic, relaxed vibe, a simple picnic with a basket, wine glasses, and some fresh fruit can be magical. This setup works particularly well for golden hour sessions in open fields or mountain backdrops.

3. Books or Journals

Do you love reading? incorporating books can feel personal and nostalgic. Bonus points if it’s a favorite novel or one with handwritten love notes inside.

4. String Lights or lanterns

Nothing is more fun then a spot with string lights whether it is outside or in your car (my fun granola friends have done this on dates) this can be really fun! lanterns around a forest or on the ground for lighting a camping card game, these work especially well for evening sessions.

5. Umbrellas or Parasols

A clear umbrella during a little rain shower or a parasol in bright sunlight can make for stunning.

6. Sentimental Items

A guitar for the musician, a vintage camera, love letters from the past, or even just picking wild flowers together.

A few more ideas:

  • Bicycles or Skateboards

  • Lanterns or Candles

  • Coffee Mugs or Takeout Cups

  • Telescope or Binoculars

  • headphones or earbuds

  • Hand-picked wildflowers

  • A kite for a breezy day

  • Ice cream cones or popsicles

  • A hammock in the forest

  • Sleighs, sleds, or snowshoes

  • Painting supplies

  • Card games

Pro Tips for Using Props

  1. Keep It Simple
Props are there to enhance the session, not take over.

  2. Incorporate Movement
Choose props that naturally invite interaction. Toss some flower petals, twirl a cozy scarf together on a chilly day, or share a warm drink from the same mug. These little moments create candid, heartfelt photos.

  3. Match the Vibe
Make sure the props fit the theme. A vintage suitcase can look stunning in an old-town setting but might feel out of place in an urban backdrop.
