Why Choose Lake Powell?
If you're dreaming of a stunning desert backdrop with orange canyons, blue waters, and a sense of adventure for your wedding or elopement, Lake Powell should be at the top of your list! This location offers a unique and intimate setting to say “I do.” Whether you’re planning a wedding or an intimate elopement, here’s everything you need to know about getting married at Lake Powell.
Choose Your Location
Lake Powell is massive, with numerous spots to hold your ceremony. Some popular options:
Padre Bay and Gunsight Bay beaches are my favorite spots! Accessible only by boat, they offer a secluded and intimate atmosphere, perfect for your ceremony.
On the Water: You can rent a houseboat to host a unique, on-the-water ceremony.
Lone Rock and Wahweap Beach are both public beaches easily accessible by car and offer flat, beaches. However, be aware that they can get quite busy depending on the time of year.
Although not technically part of Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend in Glen Canyon National Park is a stunning spot with beautiful cliffside views, where the Colorado River wraps around the red rock formations.
There are nearby venues around Lake Powell with beautiful views if you’re looking for a no-hassle, low-planning experience.
How?
Let’s get into the nitty-gritty deets:
Choose Your Location
Each spot offers its own charm, so think about the vibe you want for your big day.
Get Your Marriage License
Before you say “I do,” you’ll need to obtain a marriage license. Since Lake Powell spans two states—Arizona and Utah—be sure to apply for a marriage license in the correct county depending on where your ceremony will take place.
- Arizona: If you’re getting married in the Arizona part of Lake Powell, you can get a marriage license in Page, AZ, at the Coconino County Clerk’s Office.
-Utah: For ceremonies on the Utah side, apply for a license in Kane County.
Permits and Regulations
Depending on where you plan to hold your ceremony, you may need a permit, especially if it’s on federal land. For example, a permit is required to hold a ceremony in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Plan for the Weather
Lake Powell is beautiful year-round, but the weather can be extreme. Summer temperatures can reach well over 100°F, while winters are cooler but can be unpredictable. The best time for a wedding or elopement is in the spring or fall when temperatures are more moderate, and the skies are clear. If you choose summer I recommend doing it earlier in the morning!
Things to Do After Your Ceremony
Lake Powell is not just a beautiful backdrop for your wedding, it’s also the perfect place to enjoy some post-ceremony activities. Whether you’re planning a mini-honeymoon or want to enjoy the area by yourself or with your guests, here are some must-do activities:
